Just Starting Calisthenics?
Here’s The Best Calisthenics Starter Equipment.
Not sure what equipment you need to start calisthenics? Over the years, I’ve tested different equipment, brands and even DIY’d my own to figure out what calisthenics equipment is worth your time and money (spoiler alert, I don’t recommend making your own, it's way too sketchy - I know from experience.)
Welcome, my name is Summerfunfitness. I am a self-taught calisthenics athlete with no gymnastics experience. I'm on a mission to simplify calisthenics training so you can achieve unreal strength and mobility without a gym.
I've partnered with Pullup & Dip to answer the questions that all calisthenics beginners are wondering:
- What is the best piece of calisthenics equipment?
- What calisthenics equipment do you ACTUALLY need?
I've spent hundreds of dollars on equipment from gymnastics rings, door-frame-pull-up bars, dip bars and more. Some pieces I initially loved…but ultimately collected dust and took up space in my tiny apartment. Others were too difficult to transport, so I couldn't use them for outdoor workouts. If you're an outdoor-loving calisthenics athlete on a budget, here's my #1 pick for the best calisthenics equipment…
Pullup & Dip's Push-Up Bars
Here's why you need a pair of high-quality push-up/handstand bars in your gym bag.

1. Get in the Zone
If you train handstands or calisthenics in a gym, you may have experienced trouble "saving your space" or having others walk into your crash zone (eek!). The push-up bars help to signify where you are training, preventing not-so-fun social encounters.
If you train from home, setting out your bars can help to focus your attention on your workout - rather than the dirty dishes in the sink.
2. Quickly Progress from Beginner to Advanced
The added elevation of the push-up bars makes L-Sits, V-Sits and Core work more attainable, which allows you to strengthen positions that would otherwise be inaccessible to calisthenics beginners.
Not sure if this is true? Put down your phone and try doing a V-Sit on the floor right now, and you’ll see why the bars will come in handy.
Do Your Wrist Tire Out Before Your Muscles?
Do you struggle with wrist pain when your hands are flat on the ground? If so, you probably lack the wrist mobility the exercise requires - but don’t fret. Most of us have the same problem in the beginning. The push-up bars put your wrist into a strong, neutral position, increasing the overall amount of exercises and repetitions you can perform, allowing you to uplevel your muscle growth and skills quicker.
3. Increase Mobility Without Spending More Time Stretching
Squeezing in flexibility work can sometimes be a pain. That’s why I like to use push-up bars to incorporate extended range of motion training. Training push-ups or handstand push-ups through a greater range of motion increases your overall mobility and strength without adding additional flexibility drills.
4. Make Gains in Any Location
One of my favourite parts of training calisthenics is the ability to workout anywhere I want! Whether that means training while camping, hiking, or at home.
However, finding a flat, pebble-free surface to train can sometimes be tricky. That's where the push-up bars come in handy. The sturdy design and increased elevation keep my hands and clothes clean while allowing me to train handstands, planches and core without needing to find a concrete pad in the middle of the forest.
TIP: Keep the bars in your car, as you'll never know where you'll end up training.
For all these reasons and more, the push-up bars from Pullup & Dip are my number one choice for calisthenics equipment. A close second would be a door frame pull-up bar (but you can’t take it to the beach with you, that’s why it’s not my first pick). Want your own pair? Use discount code: SUMMERFITNES10.
