When doing a bodyweight workout, you have to use your hands for almost every upper body exercise. This means that high forces and intensities are exerted on your wrists, which can lead to wrist injuries in the case of high-volume workouts. In order to minimise the risk of injury, it makes sense to use wrist wraps. These support the wrists during the exercises and ease the strain on them during your workout. Today, we would like to give you five reasons why wrist wraps are a good idea for your workouts.


1. Support for the wrists during your workout

Wrist wraps are a type of wrist guard. They are designed to support the wrists during your workout. This means that they relieve the strain on the wrists whilst supporting them at the same time. In exercises such as push-ups or handstands, you lie with the palms of your hands flat on the ground, then, during the extension, a lot of strain is exerted on your wrists. Wrist wraps are used to provide the wrists with some relief, so that they are not subjected to the full force of the exercise. This is important if you work out frequently, and, for example, if you are just learning to do a handstand, because you cannot transfer your entire bodyweight from your feet to your hands overnight. Your wrists, ligaments and tendons need time to get used to this burden. This is where wrist wraps are ideal. An added bonus: you wrists remain warm during your workout, because they are in constant contact with the wrist wraps.


2. Preventive use

The more strain you put on your wrists during your workout, the higher the risk of overburdening, and therefore of injury. For this reason it makes sense to wear wrist wraps as a preventive measure, to protect our wrists and relieve the strain you exert on them, so that you do not suffer any injuries. You do not have to wear the wraps for the entire workout, but you should definitely put them on for difficult exercises and sets. For lower intensity exercises, you can and should work out without the wraps, so that your wrists have the chance to get accustomed to the strain. But, you should also listen to your body. If it tells you that it needs a break, then give it the break it needs. Sooner or later, no aids will help anymore, but smart workouts will help you to achieve your goals!


3. Support in the case of injury

If you are have already suffered from a wrist or hand injury, and want to start working out again slowly, wrist wraps will help you to get back to the point where you can cope with the strain once again. You can choose the level of support by loosening or tightening the wrist wraps. The tighter you apply the wrist wraps, the more wrist support they will provide. But be careful not to apply them so tightly that they cut off your circulation. You will quickly learn how tightly to apply them, so that they provide optimum support. This way, you can start to put more strain on your wrists bit by bit, without the danger of over-burdening them. Here too, the first rule is to listen to your body!

 

4. Mental support

One major aspect that cannot be ignored is the mental support that can be obtained from using wrist wraps. When you start exerting major strain on your wrists, e.g. weighted dips, handstands or planches, and are afraid of sustaining injuries, use wrist wraps. They will help you to feel much more confident. Perhaps you already know that feeling from heavy squats with or without a belt. With a belt, you feel much more confident – it is exactly the same with the wrist wraps. So, if you want to try out a new exercise and are afraid of injuring yourself, keep this in mind ;).

 

 


5. Increased strength through wrist wraps

Due to the aspects of mental support and the stabilisation of the wrists, you will be in a position to move more weight. The wrist wraps keep your wrists in a stable position, giving you a direct transfer of strength, and you do not need to worry that some of your strength will be lost by the stabilisation of your wrists.
